From Phil Ferguson

We just heard the sad news about Jay’s death. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Rud, Ann, and all of Jay’s family and friends.

My wife, Dianne, and I never met Jay. However, through the writings of his parents, he had a tremendous influence on our family’s life. Our son, Ian, is just a year or so younger than Jay. When Ian was in his early 20s, we were struggling – along with families throughout the country -- to figure out how to manipulate the DD service system in our state to allow Ian to lead a productive life of inclusion, friendship, and authentic belonging in his community. In both their writings and presentations, Ann and Rud described an emerging adult life for Jay that seemed to fit what we were seeking for our son. Jay was a trailblazer, and like all such trailblazers, his influence extends to all of those who have followed the path he helped to create. So, though we never met Jay, we knew he was “up ahead,” marking the trail for rest of us. We will miss his presence. We will continue to benefit from his example.

Our thoughts are with all of you.
