From Jim Paul

Dear Rud and Ann,

News of Jay's death has shocked and grieved people around the country and beyond. We join thousands in sharing your profound loss, your deep grief, and your celebration of Jay's life. All of us who have devoted our lives to the education and interests of persons with disabilities recognize the extraordinary contributions you have made to the world by sharing your lives with Jay. Drawing inspiration and vision from your son, you were at the forefront, leading the transition in understanding the nature and value of individual difference within families. You were leaders of a small number of parents and professionals lighting the way for the world to see, hear, and experience the gifts of those who had been made invisible by labels or consigned to silence because they were considered burdens in many academic, political, and religious histories. You shared the heart and soul of your family and wrote a new story for individuals with differences and their families. It is a story that has significantly impacted ethics, research, service, and public policy. It is such a large story with such a modest title, Jay.You have touched our hearts and minds, the way we prepare professionals, and the research we conduct. Jay was a wonderful gift to your family and you have shared his gift with the world. Even as we grieve with you and Amy and Kate, we wanted to acknowledge your family's story that will be celebrated for many years to come. Our deepest sympathies and love are with you all.

Your friends,

Jim Paul, Jeannie Kleinhammer-Tramill, Daphne Thomas
