From Ruth Ann Guess

Dearest Rud, Ann and family,

I just now made an on line check of the LJW and saw Jay's obituary. I called Sherrie as I simply could not believe it was true. I am so stunned and so very sad that I missed his funeral and visitation. Had I known I would have been there. I had stopped my daily newspaper since early December and just had not gotten it started again. My heart is so broken for you. I know how much you loved your precious Jay. Everyone loved Jay! I remember his 40th birthday party and how happy he was that evening. Doug and I had so much fun watching Jay dance and celebrate.

Jay's life had such an impact on the lives of people with disabilities. His inspiration to the two of you has make immeasurable differences around the world. Jay truly was not only a gift to you but became a gift to everyone through you and your accomplishment in the field of special education.

Just yesterday I was reading something so assuring in The Last Battle by C.S. Lewis...from the Narnia series... For Jay the end is the beginning...the beginning of his real story. All this life on earth is just a cover and the title page: now at last he is beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.

Doug loved Jay and now they can share some chocolate and lots of Munchers doughnuts ... they are together once again. I know Doug has welcome him with open arms as has all of heaven. Jay will be able to share all the mysteries of his bi-polar disorder with Doug. So may questions will be answered. One day we too will share in this "great story."

Please know I am so very sad for you and your family. If there is anything I can do please let me know. The times I was honored to share occasions with your dear Jay were my pleasure. I know you will miss the joy and love he brought to your lives as will everyone who knew him. I grieve with you and for you. So much I do not understand, but I do know our God is merciful and brings comfort to those who morn. My tears are now also for you. Please let me know when you feel up to company.

My love and prayers are with you.
Ruth Ann
