My tribute to Jay is a tangential one in that I never met Jay except in stories and pictures. But always, I can hear Ann and Rud talking about Jay's "enviable life" which is what, after much advocacy, they were able to create for him. It was their inspiration and Jay's success that I've always had in the back of my mind when I've fought and advocated for my son, Logan's programming. An enviable life is a reasonable and possible option. I also listened to their daughter's talk about having Jay for a brother. It wasn't all peaches and cream; her feelings weren't always the material used in Walt Disney movies. But, she spoke from her heart, she spoke realistically...and even out of frustration and embarrassment, came love and respect with maturation. I've kept THAT presentation in my head, too, as I worried about our own daughter's anger and frustration with Logan. It was hope....yes, it can change....that life would be better for all of us. So, I thank all the Turnbull's for sharing Jay with so many of us, and for opening such private parts of their feelings and lives with us. He has been an inspiration for all that is possible for many of us who have children with challenging behaviors/autism.
Sincerely,
Anne Gentry
