My nephew (Daniel) sent me the e-mail about Jay's death. His fiancee, Carrie Mark, is a graduate student at KU and is aware that I knew the Turnbulls.
I met Jay when he was about three or four and enrolled in a day care program in Durham NC. I had been asked to provide some behavioral consultation for staff around a variety of concerns they had about some of their students, including Jay. I clearly recall the head full of blond-ish curls and what a cutey he was. In fact, he is probably the only one of the children there that I do remember.
Not long after I met Jay; I met first Rud, and then, Ann. We had the opportunity to do some cooperative training things together and developed a friendship. At the time we were all, obviously, living in North Carolina; I had a miniature Schnauzer named Gretchen and Jay used to love to play with her when they all came to visit. Gretchen was not accustomed to being around kids, but she seemed to enjoy having Jay around and having him pay attention to her. I think it may have been a mutual admiration society!
I moved to WA about 30 years ago and have only had limited, occasional contact with Rud and Ann since then. From them, and from mutual KS friends, I knew about Beach and how important it was for Jay and others. It was also, I'm sure, very important to Jay that he continued to be able to live close to his family.
Please accept my condolences; give my personal regards to Rud and Ann; and please continue to remember Jay and do for others as you obviously did for him. Since you are the contacts for e-mail, you were very special to him as he surely must have been to you. I believe he will continue to be with you and I hope that you believe the same. It will make the coming days better.
